Crowns

crowns

Crowns offer many benefits to our Cedar Rapids patients, they support teeth damaged by decay, hold severely cracked teeth together, balance the bite, can be used as an anchor for dental bridges, and restore teeth after a root canal.

The need for a crown is simply determined by the condition of the tooth. Crowns are used in situations where a tooth has advanced decay, if the tooth has fractures that compromise the structure of the tooth, the tooth has had a root canal, or sometimes purely for aesthetics. If a crown is recommended by Dr. Besler the reason and the treatment will be thoroughly explained during your consultation. All questions and concerns are answered to ensure that you feel confident in your decision to go forward with the best treatment for your dental health.

Crowns are “cemented” onto an existing tooth and fully cover the portion of your tooth above the gum line. In effect, the crown becomes your tooth's new outer surface. Crowns can be made of porcelain, metal, or both. Porcelain crowns are most often preferred because they mimic the translucency of natural teeth and are very strong.

Getting a Crown

Crowns or onlays (partial crowns) are needed when there is insufficient tooth strength remaining to hold a filling. Unlike fillings which apply the restorative material directly into your mouth, a crown is fabricated away from your mouth.

During your first appointment in the crown process your existing tooth will be prepared, necessary impressions will be taken to send to our dental lab and a temporary crown will be placed. After the lab has created your crown, you’ll return to our office, where Dr. Besler will place your permanent crown and make sure it allows for ideal function and aesthetics.
